“recognise”（英式拼写，美式拼写为“recognize”）主要有“认出；识别；承认；认可；意识到”等含义。其用法较为灵活，可作及物动词，后面接名词、代词、从句等作宾语，也可用于一些固定搭配中表达特定含义。
认出；识别：指能够凭借视觉、听觉、嗅觉等感官或通过记忆、经验等，辨认出之前见过、听过或知道的人、事物、特征等。
例如：I recognised him at once although I hadn't seen him for ten years.（尽管我已经十年没见他了，但我还是一眼就认出了他。）
